There were two bowls of steaming soup waiting on the table. Pots and pans sat unwashed in the sink.
"Hello? I had to come in the back..."
No reply.
He was due round at eight and it was only five past now. Having had no response from the doorbell he had to force the loose window at the back of the house.
She knew he was coming. She had cooked soup. It was ready.
Where was she?
A shadow darted across the wall. He turned.
There she was sat at the table staring right through him with dark red eyes.
