Runaway (Chapter 6)

Chapter 6.
Another Escape

I heard the sound of twigs snapping and leaves crunching; as if someone was walking towards me. The sounds grew louder and louder each time. I could also hear, someone breathing deeply, quickly and heavily. I could feel warm breath on my face. Someone was standing over me. Breathing on my face. I slowly opened my eyes. A bright light. The sun was up, over my head. My eyes began to adjust to the light and to the pair of green eyes staring back at me. Black, bushy eyebrows rested on top of them. Who ever this person was they had dry, tanned skin. Purple lips and straw coloured hair. It was a man. A short man, with a checked purple and white shirt and torn, straw covered, blue jeans.
"Who are you?" I asked timidly.
"I'm Dick. I work on Farmer Ted's farm. And you little missy, ar' on 'is piece of land. You best move befor' 'e finds out!" Dick replied cheerfully.
"Yeah, of coarse. Sure. I'll be on my way then. Thank you."
I was about to leave. To go back on my journey, when he interrupted.
"Who ar' ya? What's ya name? Why ya out here on ya own?"
"My name is Jessica. I'm from Manchester. I'm trying to find my mum. She lives in Liverpool you see?"
"Good luck in findin' her little missy! Liverpool is a long way from here!"
Hoping Dick wasn't going to question me; with his weird accent I picked up my bag and began to leave. That's when I saw Farmer Ted. He was not exactly tall but not exactly short either, light skinned and quite chubby. He had: grey eyes, pink lips and rosy cheeks.
"You ain't goin' anywhere! I was bringin' the cattle round and a what a surprise I got! Dick... You ain't lettin' this little girl steal our prize cows ar' ya?" Farmer Ted retorted angrily.
I looked at Farmer Ted, puzzled. Why on earth would I want to take a bunch of stinky, disgusting cows?
"Excuse me sir, but I wasn't going to take anything. I'm just passing by. You shouldn't get worked up on a few ugly cows you know! They're just horrible!" I exclaimed.
I said the wrong thing. At the wrong time. Farmer Ted is extremely serious about his cows. He was going to be serious with me too!
"Why you little..." Farmer Ted began- turning pink, then red, then orange, then navy, then a dark purple.
"Go little missy. Run. He'll call the police. Go find ya ma," Dick whispered.
I took Dick's advice and ran as fast as I could. I could hear Farmer Ted's screaming and Dick's happy laughter. I looked behind. Dick wasn't laughing anymore. Farmer Ted was running towards me. Dick behind him.
"You come back here, right now. You prize cow thief. You little scum bag!" Farmer Ted shouted.
I heard a loud bang behind me. I kept on running faster and faster every time my foot hit the ground. I was getting out of breath. Surely Farmer Ted had stopped. I turned around. No-one. Just me. I tried to forget about everything that happened. But the thoughts just came rushing back at me; like water in a stream. I looked behind me again. I could see a small, shiny, silver object lying on the floor. I carefully walked closer, until I gasped. Tears filled my eyes. The rusty metal object... Was a gun! He tried to shoot me! He wanted to kill me! I didn't do anything! I didn't want his stupid cows!
I could of died. My mind went back to the loud bang. It was the gun! I had to get away quick. Before another stranger saw me and thought I was trying to steal their 'prize cows!'
I carried on walking. Very slowly. I would normally be running, running to mum. Today, I just wanted to be back home. With Philip. Mary. Lucas. I've enough adventure for one day.
