Runaway (Chapter 9)

Chapter 9
A Starving Situation

There's always good times and bad times. The incident with the butterfly was a good time. But not so long after that... There was a bad time. A VERY bad time. It was 4:00AM in the morning when I woke up. Rex's head was in my backpack.
"What on earth are you doing Rex!"
Rex lifted his head up. His snout was covered with chocolate pieces and a apples core was lying on the floor. Rex continued eating everything that I had brought.
"Rex NO!"
I lifted him up and pinned him down with my left hand. I rummaged through my bag, looking for any spared food. Nothing. All I had was a apple core and and a yogurt pot. What will we eat for the next few days. This is all MY fault if I had zipped up the bag before I went to sleep we would still have something to eat. Rex slowly got up and sat down next to me. He rested his head on my hand. As of to say: Don't worry. We'll figure out something!"
I wiped my years from my face and stood up.
"Well there is a good side to being up so early. No cars! Come on Rex."
I followed my directions down the M57. My directions said I only needed to 'drive' for another hour and I would reach Liverpool. Mums so close. Tears gathered in my eyes. Rex looked up and stopped. He tilted his head wondering why I was leaking.
"It's ok boy! Keep walking!"
Night drawed nearer and nearer. We had walked all day. Hadn't stopped once! But we had to now.
"Rex. Stay boy. We'll we resting here for the night."
Satisfyingly, Rex sat down and soon began chasing a leaf, which was blowing in the cold wind. I wrapped my blanket around me, after putting on my jacket. Rex suddenly stopped and edged towards me.
"What is it boy? Are you alright?"
Rex was shivered from his fluffy ears to his sharp claws. I reached in my bag and pulled out my blanket.
Thankfully, I brought my pillow cover. I pulled it off the pillow and lifted Rex and gently placed him inside. He was obviously happy. But still cold. I took my leggings and spare tops and stuffed them in the pillow case too. Rex lay down and buried his head in my warm clothes. Now he's warm. What about me? I was already warm; but I pulled on a extra pair of socks.
I slept like a log that night and woke feeling refreshed- but VERY hungry. I searched in my bag. Pulled out everything and still NO FOOD! That's when my brain woke up and reminded me that Rex had ate everything. I drank a full bottle of water and woke Rex.
I was STARVING and so was Rex. We couldn't walk further than five metres. We were tired and had no fuel. My knees suddenly failed and I fell to the floor.
Not only hadn't I had breakfast today. But I hadn't eaten anything yesterday either! I dropped my bag and lay down.
I couldn't move. I searched for the water in my backpack and poured it in Rex's mouth. He tried to eat the cap. I had to prise open his jaws and pull it out. I zipped my backpack and stared at the trees. So green and lush. The leaves were: red, orange, pink and some where even purplish blue. One of the leaves danced to the ground. I watched it float down to the grass. I saw a glimmering silver light in the grass. I carefully got up and crawled towards the light. When I reached the light, I found a coin. A few coins actually. The suns rays were shining on them; so the reflections were bouncing off. I lifted it up and examined it. They were dirty
and rusty. I breathed on them and rubbed them with my top. $2! There was three $2 coins! I could buy some food at the next cafe.
I desperately searched around my area. Nothing.
"Get up Rex! We're going to the cafe!"
Rex jumped up and walked ahead. I slowly lifted myself and carefully began to walk. It was hard to walk when you was famished. No energy to keep you going.
We had been walking for half an hour.
No cafe. No food. Just road and grass. Just when we was about to give up; we struck gold.
