•Chapter 25 - Until I Come Back•

"Sir, what's her name?" the Paramedic asked me for the fifth time. She didn't seem impatient or upset that I wouldn't talk to her, she was as kind as ever, calm and relaxed.
Ammi was hyperventilating, convulsing on the living room floor, two male paramedics trying to calm her.
"You need to tell me her name" the woman tried again, placing a hand on my shoulder. I caught my breath, shying away from the sight of Ammi's wild body tugging itself along the floor, her eyes wide, a deep abyss of black.
"She's called Ammi" I choked, the words literally making my throat hurt. The woman knelt beside her, bracing her shoulders as she tried to get a response from Ammi.
"Ammi, can you hear me?".
"Ammi, calm down".
Ammi was crying and wailing, she began to grasp the air around her, clawing and scraping at some imaginary beast.
The police sirens were nearing. I didn't have long.
I shoved a male paramedic out of the way and threw myself down beside her shoulder.
"Ammi, listen to me" I begged.
"I know it wasn't supposed to happen like this," I continued, choking out the words. I didn't want to say them, but I had no choice. I had to be strong when she could not. She seemed to be listening to me, as her wild eyes were searching mine for reassurance.
"But I have to go now, and I need you-" I was crying like a child, tears streaming down my tanned cheeks, over my jaw and down my neck.
"I need you to be strong, until I can come back" I told her. Her body continued to convulse and writhe, but her hands grasped at me and her eyes cried violent tears of need.
The sirens were right outside now. The sound of stomping boots through the hall told me that my time was up.
"POLICE!" A deep voice shouted, and eight to ten men came rushing through the living room in swat uniform, rifles in hand.
"FREEZE! Put your hands up where I can see them" the lead man shouted, his bullet proof mask hiding the features of his face.
I held my hands up, aware of the armed men behind me. I stared down at Ammi as I felt the tip of a gun touch my back.
"I love you" I whispered to her.
"Kai-San Tucker, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Ammi Lockheart" he spat at me.
I did everything they asked, staring at Ammi the whole time. I wanted to remember her face when I was in jail.
"Put your hands on your head please".
The gun was lowered and my hands were folded behind my back, before cold handcuffs came into contact with my wrists.
As I was dragged out of the room, the last thing I saw was Ammi, struggling and crying as she tried to reach me. She couldn't. And she wouldn't. I was sure I wouldn't see that gorgeous face for a long, long time.
