We have all encountered change in our lives; both good and bad. We have all beed tested at our ability to adapt to new environments, ideas and ways of living however subtle the changes may be.
Growing up, we seem to encounter change around every corner. New towns, new schools, new people. Regardless of how we decide to live our life, change will toss us from side to side, shaking our existence. Our ability to adapt to those changes boils down to a heap of factors. Self-esteem, upbringing, confidence (although they go hand in hand) are just a few factors of what determines how well we will be able to adapt to change. That’s why beating the odds is such an incredible achievement.
On the very edge of change, we balance. We sway with the wind with a pressing decision at hand. Either to securely take a step back; or to dive head-first into oblivion. That agonizing pain of taking it to the next level isn’t usually the most appealing thing we can imagine.
We push ourselves because we have to, not because we like it.
And many take little to no pride in our accomplishments. Following the stream without hesitation or thought. Drifting along with the mass of people, trying to make our voices heard; our personality respected, our values intact.
We seek solace in our environment, in ourselves and the people around us. Taking that incredible leap into the unknown is sometimes like being stripped naked and pushed out in front of an audience.
I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to prepare for change. A way to ridden myself from anxiety and being succumbed by an incontrovertible distress. And I have realized that there is no universal way to deal with it. But there is a foundation we can all stand securely on: we all feel it in various degrees.
We have to look at the possibility of growth, knowledge and self-expression in the face of change. We need to not look to much at the “what ifs”, and focus on the “what now’s”.
Change will never leave us unmarked, neither will it be easy. Very few things are. But there is also a sense of solace in the anxiety around change, because it won’t last forever.
Remember that you’re alright. That being scared is nothing to be scared of. That preparing for the inevitable is futile. To live in the now; and to find that voice that says “You’re alright”.
Because you are.
