Memories In The Mist

CHAPTER 1
Dad
I choked and spluttered as clouds of smoke filled my mouth and slid down my throat. My dad held my hand and took me outside the house, stroking my hair.
"Sweetheart, I need you to go and take your sister to the market and wait there," my dad told me, his voice hoarse from the smoke.
"But dad-" I wailed.
"Please. I need you to do this. For me. For your sister. For your mother. I will be with you soon! Run!" My dad choked.
This time, I squeezed my sister's hand and obeyed him. I stopped when I was half way to the market, running didn't help me. My mind raced and everything was starting to go blurry. I need to go back to dad, to mum. Now. I grabbed Mia's hand and pulled her back to my burning home. It wasn't much of a home, just a hut with 3 solid beds and an old rocking chair.
"Come on Mia! Come on!" I tugged her hand, pleading for her little's legs to go faster.
When I arrived back at my home, my heart stopped beating. My dad lay on the floor, eyes moist with tears and panting.
"DAD!" I screamed.
My dad fixed his gaze on me then coughed.
"I thought...I told you...to go..." My dad whispered.
I shook my head and rested it on my dad's chest.
"Where's mum?" I questioned.
"Finding help," my dad said in barely a whisper.
I dragged my dad with all my might, 10 metres away from our burning hut. None of us had any idea what could have caused the fire, it didn't matter, as long as we were safe.
"I'm not..going to live through," my dad whispered, his eyes filled with tears.
"You are dad! You have to!" I wailed, although I knew he was speaking the truth.
He shook his head.
"Look after yourself, and Mia, and your mum. I love...you," these were my dad's final words.
His chest stopped moving and he was no longer gasping. I screamed and screamed, tears splattering on the floor.
"You can't be dead!" I screamed.
There was no sign of life in my dad's body. He was a limp, lifeless body, I loved. His eyes were closed peacefully and I kissed his forehead. Minutes later, men came and took me away from my dad, and sat me down on a bench to calm down. They took my dad's body and I watched it go. I couldn't move, tears were still streaming down my cheeks and there was nothing I could do to stop them. My feet and hands were numb so as I tried to get up and I just collapsed back on the bench.
That was the first tragedy in my life, my dad's death.
*************************
I pressed my hands over my ears and screamed, gasping and spluttering. Cold sweat trickled down my back, and my body shook violently as I tried to push my nightmare out of my mind. I had already watched my dad die once and I couldn't watch it again.
"Ariana!" Mia gasped.
I let myself breathe then looked apologetically at my sister.
"I'm sorry for waking you Mia, I had a nightmare," I explained.
Mia patted her bed gesturing that I sit with her. I obeyed her and lay next to her so she could lay her little head on my arm.
"Try and sleep," I whispered.
After a while, I could hear Mia's quiet, gentle snoring. I hummed to myself, trying to forget my nightmare, but failing. Soon enough, I must have fallen asleep too, but this time I didn't have my nightmare. It was just a dream.

(This chapter is quite sad, so I'll try and make the next ones happier!)
