Chapter 8
Break
Surprisingly, I was first to arrive at school today, I was usually one of the last. It was depressing, walking round on my own, kicking pebbles, with no laughter or fun. I just ambled round the field, waiting for someone, anyone, to come and brighten the atmosphere.
"Hi," I heard someone groan from behind me.
I gasped, and spun round quickly, checking who it was. It was just Lily. I breathed a sigh of relief. I looked at her carefully, only to find that her nose was still slightly pink and she had dark circles under her eyes.
"Lily! You shouldn't creep up on me like that! You made me jump! Anyway, how are you feeling? I'm glad you made it to school," I told her.
"Sorry. Slightly better than yesterday...you?" Lily added, biting her lip.
"Angry, annoyed, irritated, relieved, nervous, anxious, shocked, the list is endless..." I sighed.
Lily nodded sympathetically and I half smiled at her, she always understood me so well.
"Err...Scarlett?" Lily asked.
"Yeah?"
"There's Paige," she whispered, pointing at the school gates.
My heart thumped in my chest, I had no clue what to say to her. I would just have to try and hide.
"Scarlett! Lily!" Amber shouted, as she and Paige walked towards us.
Well, never mind the 'hiding' plan. I twisted my fingers around each other nervously, she was getting closer with every step. She gave me a smile, which I did not return.
"What did I do?" Paige asked, frowning.
"I think you know."
"No, Scarlett, I don't," Paige whispered.
"Think," I breathed, before storming away.
I could hear her whisper something to Amber, but I didn't stop to ask what she said. To my astonishment, Lily followed me and she put an arm on my shoulder.
"Errr..." she saw the confused expression on my face.
"After the things she put about my best friend last night, do you really think I'm going to stay with her?" Lily questioned, her eyebrows raised.
"I-well...don't break your friendship with her just for me," I told her.
"Just did, whoops...anyway when are you going to tell her?" Lily asked; she seemed completely at ease.
"Uh, I'm not sure. You seem relaxed," I observed.
"So should you. Come on, let's get to class..." Lily said.
I froze on the spot, how was she so relaxed? I shrugged it off and followed her through the corridor to English. Amber and Paige were already there, sitting at the four-person table, where we all usually sat together. I walked straight past them and sat at the back on a two-person table with Lily.
"Wh-" Amber began, but she never had time to finish her sentence as the lesson began.
Throughout the lesson, Paige kept looking behind her, at me. I determinedly stared straight ahead, attempting to concentrate on the lesson. Soon enough the bell rang and I wandered to science, other things on my mind. After sitting through a boring science lesson, it was finally lunch break and I sat at the edge of the field, waiting for Lily.
"Right, what did I do?" I heard a voice say, Paige's.
"I have seen the emails you sent to Leon," I replied, shortly.
Paige turned a brilliant red and tried to cover her face with her hair. Amber looked confused.
"What emails?"
"You haven't seen them?" I frowned.
"No, what did they say?"Amber asked.
Luckily, I had printed out a copy of the emails last night, I took them out my bag and handed them to her. She took them and I followed her eyes as she read the emails. Every so often, her eyes would widen in shock.
"Paige, you wrote this?" Amber gasped.
"I-well, um...yes," Paige whispered.
"How could you say that about your friend!?" Amber shouted before storming off, and taking me with her.
Paige stood there watching us walk away, her face a mask of regret. I shouldn't have to feel sorry for her, not after the words that had pierced my heart on the email. Not after that.
"No,"
