Remembering War.

I remember it at nighttime,
The never ending blows,
The yelling and the blasting,
And the far-off, distant glows.

I remember it at sun-up,
The red across the sky,
Mirroring the blood 'twas shed,
And the gunfire passing by.

I remember it at dead noon,
When we'd hunker down and eat,
Complain about the weather and
Complain about wet feet.

I remember it in winter,
When the cold ate at our toes,
Wondering what started this
This war - who even knows?

I remember it in autumn,
The golds and browns - and red,
Stepping through our no man's land,
Trying to ignore the dead.

I remember it in springtime,
And still the war raged on,
Thinking of the friends we'd lost,
So many friends were gone.

I remember it in summer,
When the sun beat on our skin,
Sweat was pouring through our packs,
We wished our clothes were thin.

I'll remember it forever,
Those years and months and days,
Spent with guns across our backs,
And plotting power plays.

But not once I remember,
Just WHY I fought that war,
For it became a part of life,
Another evil law.
