-TIFFANY-
"Hey Sarah" I said, approaching a slumbering Sarah.
"Tiffany? Is that you?" she said, through half closed eyes.
"Yeah. I've got you a treat!" I said, sitting down alongside her and passing her the latest edition of Vogue. "It's the September issue. I don't know if you know, but it's the most highly coveted--" I began, but I was abruptly cut off by her hugging me.
"Thank you" she said, her head buried in the folds of my oversized sweater.
"That's alright" I laughed, placing down a litre bottle of water and a take out box containing a day's worth of food.
"How was your date with Nate last night?" she said, sitting cross legged across from me, take out box already open on her lap.
"It was good thank you, really lovely"
"How did he react?" she said, intently gazing at me. Yesterday, I'd told her everything about my plan, so it was nice to share all this with someone.
"He was over the moon, and he's being so supportive about the baby and everything"
"He's going to be such a good father!" she said, stuffing her face with the food.
"Elegance please Madame!" I joked, making her laugh.
"Tiffany?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you. You know, for doing all this for me"
"It's a pleasure. If you had any other personality I probably wouldn't, but you feel like a friend" I said, rubbing my hand on her bony knee. "Anyway, I should probably be off. Is that everything you'll need?" I said, standing up.
"Yes thank you. Really, thank you. I'm going to go to the job centre today" she said, opening the first few pages of Vogue.
It was amazing to see how a simple piece of writing could bring such joy and solace to someone who's going through as much as she is. "Thats great, walk with me?" I said, walking her to the top of the subway steps. "It's just down there, turn right and then walk about 3 blocks" I said, walking the other way and waving, not noticing the man walking behind me.
-NATE-
I woke up slowly, enjoying the feel of the crisp white sheet on my bare torso. I reached my hand across to feel for Tiffany, but I couldn't find her. Instead, I felt a sheet of paper, which I picked up and read:
"It's 8am, I couldn't sleep so I've gone to see Sarah and give her food and stuff. I should be back for 9, but I've taken my phone if you need me. Sweet dreams, T x"
I looked across at the clock, and decided to call her, as it was almost 9.
"Hey T" I said as she answered.
"I'm just walking back now, I should be home in about 5 minutes"
"Okay, thanks. See you then"
I lay back down in bed, thinking about what a wonderful thing it was that Tiffany was doing. She was feeding a homeless teenager, and although it wasn't costing us an arm and a leg, the thought and the initiative was there.
Just as I got up and got some jeans on, I heard a little knock on the door. I ran downstairs, forgetting to put a shirt on, and opened the door.
"Hey!" I said, expecting it to be Tiffany.
"Oh!" Mollie replied, eyes wide.
"Mollie!" I said, mouth equally as wide. "I thought you were Tiffany, sorry! Come in, let me get some clothes on" I ran up the stairs and grabbed the nearest shirt, which happened to be a white button down.
"Sorry! I didn't mean to barge in like this!"
"No no it's fine honestly! Tiffany should be back in a few minutes"
"You know what they say about white shirts and blue jeans?" she said, edging closer towards me.
"No I don't. Care to enlighten me?"
"I don't know either, but it's a damn good combination" she said, kissing my cheek.
"How was the Caribbean?" I said, after a pause that was edging on too long.
"So great, but Charlie and I broke up"
"What? No way! He didn't tell me that?"
"When did you speak?"
"Yesterday morning"
"It happened as soon as we landed a few hours ago. I mean, we both knew it wasn't working out, and we didn't want things to be dragged out at school. It's so hard maintaining a relationship in that place!"
"Uh-huh" I agreed, my mind spinning. It was hard to maintain a relationship at school. And Tiffany and I are expected to be married? The same feeling of sickness rose in my stomach again, the feeling that was omnipresent whenever I thought about leaving Tiffany or something going wrong.
"Anyway, where's the scan?" she said, walking over to the kitchen door.
"It's over here" I said, heading over to the coffee table where it was framed.
"Oh Nate! She's gorgeous!"
"She?"
"Well I hope it's a girl!"
"I knew you would! I know you too well!"
"What can I say, we made quite a good pairing once upon a time"
"We did didn't we? Anyway, want a tour?" I said, gesturing up the stairs.
"Go on then!" she said, flicking her long blond hair over one shoulder and gliding elegantly up the stairs.
