The Mirror

When I look into the mirror I'm surprised to see,

a reflection of somebody who thinks he is me.

I stare into his eyes. He doesn't look away.

He gazes back at me, not knowing what to say.

This moment lasts for ever as neither of us blink.

I know what his thoughts are, he knows what I think.

We stand our ground, no one backs away.

I'm sure he almost gave in, He almost walked away.

The consequences to great, he decided best to stay.

By announcing his existence it would be us that he'd betray.

An involuntary twitch as both of us realise,

we are two separate people sharing one disguise,

so we can shift the blame when we live with lies.

This way nothing changes, everything stays the same,

we brake the same rules when we play this lifelong game.

In one blissful moment I see clearly through his spell.

I realise who I am, he is just an empty shell.

His expression clearly different from the emotion I am feeling,

worried about the secrets he's unconsciously revealing.

I turn my head and walk away,

acutely aware that he must stay.

He'll catch me again this is not defeat,

as he sits and waits until next we meet.
