The whirring lights; red and blue, stirred in the rain slipping from the clouds' grasp, jumping diagonally from them, as if trying to escape out as far away as possible. I heard Charlie crying downstairs, sitting on the windowsill, scratching the glass. The police. I ran to my window and peered down at the broad street; no sign. I slid downstairs to look out the window; no sign. Charlie wasn't at the window anymore. I called for my sister, who I thought I had heard walking around the house, but a sign on the fridge guided me otherwise. She had written that she would be coming over again in a month, and the date of her arrival was a week away. Though I had seen her in the house yesterday? I paced swiftly around the landing, brushing up against all the windows though I could only see rain. Where did the lights go?
"Open up! It's the police!" was bellowed from the front door, a knocking emerged against it. "Open up!" the knocking grew louder. "OPEN UP!"
I raced to the door and threw it open, mumbling a warning to be quiet as we had children in the house sleeping, though a frosty patter of precipitation greeted me. Where did the voice come from?
"Hello?" I called. Silence. "HELLO-O?"
I stepped back, repeating the action until my back hit the stair-gate, I opened it and ran to my bed. Heart beating faster.
