The thunder was so loud, it didn't seen real, like a dragon in a dream. Lightning flashed and cracked, too close for anyone's taste. Ferris pulled her blanket around her. Just seeing the rain stream down the window made her cold.
She closed her eyes and imagined a girl with pale green eyes and auburn hair. She had a pale, freckled face and ears that stuck out of a messy pony tail. Ferris, in fact, had imagined herself. In this dream, she wore dark jeans and a black button up shirt, a ragged red cloth tied around her knee.
There was a boy, too, with dark curly hair. His eyes were brown and hard. He wore the same kind if dark clothing, like he didn't want to be seen, and the red cloth peaked out of his shirt collar. Ferris knew who this was- Griffon Emerson, who she imagined a while ago. But he wasn't supposed to be good.
They stood together in a small forest. A monster was coming through the woods. CRASH! A tree came down behind them. WHACK! CRASH! As tall as a tree, with talons as long as broom handles and four long, powerful legs, as dark as a storm cloud. Ferris and Griffon both knew they couldn't take down the beast. WHACK! WHACK! BOOM!
The monster was terrible, snarling, showing its fangs. Electricity crackled in its throat when it growled, and shot out through its nostrils. Two electric blue eyes were barely visible under its matted hair.
Griffon took a step back. "What do we do?" He looked panicked, like a wild fox with nowhere left to hide.
'It seems like he actually cares,' Ferris thought, but then she remembered- 'He's not real!' But when she carelessly shrugged, he stared at her in disbelief.
"What? None of this is real," she said. "I'll wake up, and it'll be over. Besides, you don't care about anything."
"That's not true!"
CRASH! Ferris felt the ground tremble and the air heat up.
The beast was only a few feet away. One swipe of its paw, and they were done. Ferris barely heard Griffon yell, "Come on, stupid!" He grabbed her by the arm and dragged her away from the foaming jaws of the beast.
Then they were running, gaining speed. The crashes of the trees were muffled by the wind whiz zing past Ferris's ears. It felt like she wasn't touching the ground.
And for a split second, she wasn't, and then she fell flat on her face.
'Of course, right when the demonic creature from the underworld decides it wants to eat me,'
she thought. 'How cliche.' Trembling, she reminded herself: "Not real!" Ferris heard Griffon shout something behind her. She looked up. The creature roared up at the storm clouds and lightning shot out of its fanged jaws, right when lightning struck outside if Ferris's bedroom window.
And suddenly, Ferris's dream became a reality.
