"They're beautiful." Aubrey said, still feeling the feathers on Derek's wings. He closed his eyes, slowly relaxing at the soothing feeling of her touch. "They, are a burden." He said. "I think it's magnificent." She said. "So are you a guardian?" She asked. "Im training. My father is, that's why he's out all the time. I'm trained on weekends." "Why do you come to school?" "My father wanted me to have a semi-normal childhood. Get a decent education." Aubrey nodded, hazel eyes fascinated. "I have to.. File them down." He said. "You should go, aubrey... It's not pretty. She stood up. His heart sank, he didn't want her to leave. He liked his new friend, and the warmth if her touch, even her aggressive ability. "Bye, Derek. See you tomorrow." He nodded. "Bye." She slipped through the door. He listened to the front door close. He headed to the bathroom, opened the drawers, pulling out his tools and painful contraptions. He winced looking at the dry bloodstains on them. He tore his shirt off, gripping the file and paused. His father was home. There was banging, and rustling, his father was yelling. "Derek!" Winston yelled. Derek grabbed a knife and bolted down the stairs, he didn't care if he was exposed to a mortal, he would always help his father. He stood at the bottom of the stairs. It was too late. A man stood, his back to Derek, with black wings, and a crossbow. His father was on the floor, white wings soaking on blood, an arrow through his chest. Derek stood in shock. He gripped the blade, pulling himself together, slowly approaching the dark angel. He raise the blade, with all of his effort, and drove it deep into his back. The dark angel screamed, falling to the floor. "Bastard!" Derek yelled, kicking the crossbow away from him, approaching his dying father. "You've done me good Derek. Your mother would've been proud. You will do great things. You can save us." "I'm gonna get help dad." "No, it's okay. This happened for a reason." "No, dad, that idiot attacked you." "Be good." Winston said, his eyes glazing over. "Dad, I love you." Winston struggled to speak, but could only exhale. Derek stared at the blood on his hands, smeared across his body, quietly sobbing on the floor.

*** "Aubrey you look like you've seen a ghost." Abigail said, watching her granddaughter pick at her peas, staring at the wall, eyes wide. She shook her head. "N-no. I'm fine." She said. "Girl, you don't look so good. Was it that boy?" Oh, yeah he sprouted wings today in front of her, but it's okay. "No, he's fine. He's really nice.. And.. Honest. I think I'm just tired." "Okay hun," she said rising. "Don't forget to wash the dishes." She said. Aubrey nodded, standing up, gathering the dishes. She washed them quietly. There was a knock on the door. She opened it, letting out a shriek. Derek, wings and all stood there. Blood coated his hands, and was smeared across his body, he had no shirt. "Derek! What are you doing out in the rain! With your wings?" "It's dark out. Please, can I come in." Aubrey froze, listening for her grandmother's whereabouts. She stared into his pretty blue eyes, his eyes looked scared, and hurt. Something happened. He exhaled. "You have to run up the stairs, last door to the left. My room. Don't make a sound. I'll be there in five." She said, nervous. When he stepped inside she realized his eyes were red, and the blood on him wasn't his. "I'll explain-" "Just get upstairs!" She growled quietly, backing against the door, exhaling slowly.
