I bought this book in the airport with pretty low expectations as I thought the film trailer looked a bit naff! But it was on sale so I thought why not?! And I am so glad I did! It was a truly lovely read. I literally couldn't wait to read the next page (I didn't put it down). The characters are crafted beautifully, the atmosphere created holds a sense of marvel and the story line is simple but effective. I especially loved the main character Jacob, as he recounts the tale from the old peoples home he is stuck in, he evokes a real sense of comedy, magic and sadness. I loved the fantasy of the circus and the harsh reality, which seemed to live side by side. The treatment of the people and animals made my stomach turn and the darker side of the performing world is unveiled. However first and foremost this is a love story, with all the classic twists and turns, with the added mystic of a travelling circus. I absolutely loved this book, and I'm glad I ignored my instincts and picked it up...I still haven't seen the film though!
