She sat there and watched him play fight after fight on the TV, the stages turning into animals and dinosaurs smiling and waving happily at her. She smiled back, not daring to wave unless he saw and thought she was odd. Suddenly one of the characters on the screen turned into a cartoon style pink duck that still had the original fighter’s hair. At that she giggled. She couldn’t help herself- She’d never seen a cartoon duck with long blond hair before. He did look round then so she tried to explain that one of his characters was a duck. He looked at her, confused for a moment, before fading softly back into the game and becoming lost to her once more. She lay down and looked about her. On the wall there were lyrics that meant something, what that was, she no longer remembered or even cared. The walls and floor seemed pretty normal so they lost her interest within a matter of seconds. But then she looked up to the shelf above the bed and saw a multi-coloured spotty pencil case. She could have sworn she hadn’t seen it before but then it seemed to grow in familiarity even though she couldn’t place it. She calmly watched with interest as the dots started spreading out into the air around the pencil case. All colours- violet, power blue, yellow just kind of fizzed for the width of a dinner plate around the pencil case. Then electric-green dots shot out from the pencil case and across the ceiling like stars or tiny fairy lights. She thought about being scared but decided against it- it was far too interesting to panic about and besides “he” was just...wait. He’d moved. He was now sitting next to her on the bed. When did that happen? It was nice that he was here. The Game Cube was off and he was now staring into space. She kissed his arm and he smiled and kissed the top of her head “I love you” “I love you too”. Then he leant forward, reaching for a cigarette and his back was all of a sudden covered in tiny green tattoos that seemed to shine from within as if he was made of light. “Wow” she whispered. He was beautiful. All too soon he leaned back and the light was gone. She told him what she had seen “Pretty cool” was his answer. Nothing fazed him, not even his girlfriend quietly tripping beside him in the half light of the morning. “We should get some sleep” he said. She nodded in reply as he lay down beside her. As she shut her eyes vision upon vision danced across a screen in front of her. Bright colours and pretty pictures entertained her. She told him of the gardens and children and houses as they flew past her face. She was so excited she failed to notice his breathing slow and his face become calm. She was on a ship flying across the stars, then she was walking down a wooded path watching daises dance in the breeze. His breathing slowed even more but she noticed nothing, too involved in her land of pixies to notice her boyfriend now start to struggle the keep the air coming into his lungs. He chocked a couple of times and yet she still did not He died beside her. She, oblivious to everything but the visions swimming all around her. Until she slowly began to notice she seemed to be sliding away from the visions “No, come back!” she called to them but they were fading and she felt like she was spiralling down and down. Trying to swim she started to scream. Only, the screams were in her head, no sound came out. To anyone looking in on them they looked like two peaceful lovers dozing away the morning. No help came. She was really struggling now, everything was so much effort. It felt like there was an indescribable weight pressing down on her chest forcing the breath out of her. The spiralling sensation continued and she didn’t even have the strength to scream in her own head anymore. She gave into the sensation because she just didn’t have the will to fight it anymore. Her last thought was of him and as she faded a sadness enveloped her for what might have been.
