25 December 2012

I pick up a dead mouse sitting on a ripped, stained couch. "Tell me again why we're staying here!" Summer sighs. "Eldonist will probably be looking in orphanages and places like that for us, not at an abondoned house in a small town." "And?" "And what? Come on. Sleep. You have school in the morning." "School??!" I've only been to school once. Summer usually homeschools me, and that's definatly not sometging I enjoy. But it's better than having to be social. "Yes, school. I signed you up at the nearest junior high, Nanwale. It's fine there." Summer's eyes sparkle. Seriously, she needs to stop doing that! "Go to bed. Now." Automatically, I walk up the creaking wooden stairs. I open my squeeking door and head into my room. I slip under the thin, moldy sheets and close my eyes. The house creaks and moans as the wind blows. This is the worst house I've ever been in! "Autumn?" Kat asks, walking into my room. She's shivering. "Yes?" "I'm scared..." she looks down. "Can I sleep with you?" "Of course!" I scoot over. Kat jumps in next to me. I stroke her hair. "It's okay... It's okay..." I sooth, even though it might not be. Probably won't be.

. . . . . .

"Bye, Kat. Remember, go to the office first." I tell Kat as she skips off into the elementary school. We're walking to our schools, which Sumner thought was 'safe'. How is this safe? I walk a ways to Nanwale Junior High. Since I've spent the last few years in Europe, I've called junior high something else, but I can't remember that right now. I don't remember much of anything right now, since I'm so nervous. I finally make it to Nanwale Junior High. It stands so tall and important, looming over me. I shudder. Wow. Busses pull up and kids stream into a set of doors. I guess I should go in there, so I do. Kids my age are chatting with other kids, teachers patrol hallways, and I don't see any classrooms or lockers at all. What kind of junior high is this? I'm supossed to go the office, so I do. "Can I help you?" A lady asks behind the desk. "Umm... I'm new..." I mumble. "Name?" "Autumn Monthler?" "Got you right here. I'll print off your schedule. It has your locker number and combination on it." the secratary clicks a button on the computer and a copy machine on the other side of the office makes some noise. "Go pick it up. You aren't allowed to go to your locker yet, only when the first bell rings. Until then, stay in the cafeteria, gym, or commons. Have a great day at Narwale Middle School!" the secratary shoes me out of the office. I thought it was Narwale Junior High! I hitch my bookbag higher up on my shoulders and look at my schedule. Chemestry first, with Mr. Layner. Hmm... I have gym 6th period. I can't wait for that. Ding! Ding! Ding! Kids run up the stairs to long hallways with lockers on both sides. My locker number is C 153. I look at the lockers as I pass by. All B's. I turn into another hallway and find C's. There we go. 134...147...153. My locker. I spin my combonation and find four textbooks waiting for me. There must be some in every locker. A girl walks up and opens the locker beside me. "Um... excuse me, but do you know what books to bring to Mr. Layner's Chemestry class?" I ask tenitavly. "Red book. Are you new?" she asks, taking out her own red book. "Yeah." I answer shyly. "I was new a couple months ago. Don't worry- it's fine here." That's what Summer had told me. "Do you know where to go?" Sadly, I don't. I shake my head. "No." "That's okay. I'll show you. I'm Caity, by the way." "Autumn." "Nice to meet you, Autumn. Let's go." Caity slams her locker and I do the same. We walk off to Chemestry. Wow. Two minutes into school and I already have a friend! But that changes the second we walk into class.
