26 December 2012
We stand on the street for a while, watching our new neighbors move in. They look nice enough, but Summer doesn't seem to like them. "They don't seem normal." Summer pulls me back. "Let's go." Since I don't want to get forced into leaving, I walk away. "Why aren't they normal?" I don't really know what is normal, because I've spent almost my entire life running from dangerous criminals. "I don't know. They just don't seem right." Summer answers. She pushes open our door and we find Kat standing right in front of us. "Are the new neighbors nice?" Kat asks. "We don't know- just stay away from them." Summer answers. She then walks away. "I have cookies from snack time. Can I bring them over to our neighbors?" "No, Kat." I sigh. "It isn't safe." "Aww..."
. . . . . .
"We have a new student today." Mr. Layner announces. What? He must be reading his notes from yesterday. There can't be another student. I look around. I don't see anyone new, even though I don't really know anybody in here. "Kalvin Westchester?" Mr. Layner says. A boy stands up off his stool. "Me." he waves. Aparantly, I'm not the only one who is socially awkward. I look at this new kid. He seems sort of familiar, but I can't exactly point out why. Chemestry is the only class I have with Kalvin, but I think about him all day. Why does he look so familiar?
. . . . . .
"There was a new kid today," I munch on one of Kat's leftover cookies, and Summer nods. "Was she... unusual in any way?" Summer asks. "He. It was a he. And no, he didn't seem unusual, except for acting like he hasn't had any real human contact ever." I answer. "Is he our new neighbor?" Kat asks. I never thought of that. "Maybe." "Can we find out?" "No, Kat..."
. . . . . .
The next day at lunch, I sit alone. I was only a celebrity for a couple days. I see the new kid, Kalvin, look around for a place to sit. Since my table is the most empty, he sits down next to me. "Hi." I take a bite of my sandwich. "Hi. I'm Kalvin." he smiles. I want to say, 'I know! I'm in your Chemestry class and your probably my neighbor!' but I don't. "Autumn." Kalvin looks at me. "I used to know somebody named Autumn." I don't know how to reply to this, so I don't. I noticed how Kalvin had an accent, but I can't seem to place what kind of accent it is. It sort of reminds me of Kat's slight accent.
. . . . . .
The next day, I'm walking home from school when Caity runs up behind me. "Hey, Amanda!" "Autumn." I correct her. "Hey, Autumn! Sorry I haven't been talking to you lately." She smiles. "I don't care." I walk faster. Caity runs in front of me. I hate this girl! "Why don't you care?" "Because I don't!" I start running now. Caity is soooo slow! I look behind me and I can't see her. Yay. "Hi Autumn!" Another voice exclaims. It's not Caity this time. "Well hey there, Kat!" I smile. "How was your day?" "Good! Do you wanna cookie?" Kat pushes a heart-shaped chocolate chip cookie my way. I forgot- today is Valentine's Day. "No, I'm fine." How does Kat keep getting all these cookies? "Okay." Kat eats the cookie herself. Fine with me. We reach our house, and I see a girl in our new neighbor's yard. She looks about 16. Kat stops dead. "What is it, Kat?" I ask. Kat doesn't reply. "What is it?" Kat is silent. The girl looks over at us. Then both Kat and the girl scream at the top of their lungs.
