_____________________ The Mouse Poem
Inspired by Sam Pepper
In the early morning, just before the dawn. I met a young dragon, who stood tall and strong. He told me tales of mischief, He told me tales of courage, He told me tales of his once best friend, the one he'd lost in the field. He said he called her Lily, but her name was really Kitty. The dragon told me he always cheated in the board games they played. And one day, after a splash in the river, Lily ran to the field, and she had never come back. He said he worried sick, but soon came to know "Every mouse is a traveller, it was time to let her go." I offered consolation, in a cup of tea and biscuits, but he noted he would prefer peaches and gravy.
The next morning I went to see him, just after the dawn. The young dragon was sitting with an owl. When he saw my standing there, he got up and declared "This owl, her name is Lily, and I will never call her Kitty. I offered her some wine, which to she simply denied. She calmly noted she'd prefer peaches and gravy." So I knew The dragon was happy, I knew he hadn't died. So I left him be, without even a scrape on his knee.
One moon later, just as the dawn, I went on a walk through a field. Upon sitting on a rock, I heard a little squeak. I carefully looked down, and this is what I found. A young mouse, the color of the sea I asked her what her name was she replied "Kitty" I then told her of the dragon, his recovery after grief. And she said to me "I was just a burden, that dragon need me not. He was a cheater, but learned to stop. He became strong, I sang him songs. He may have been sad, but it led him to love, did it not? I knew what I was doing, right from the start. Making a best friend, and saving his heart." I understood then, the mouse was greater than I thought.
