I eventually decided upon a royal blue dress. I chose it specifically because my mother hated the colour on me. She always commented that it clashed with my black hair and green eyes. I knew that by me wearing this dress it would upset my mother and maybe just maybe it might even ruin her night. Of cause by wearing this particular dress I would incur my mother’s wrath tomorrow, but the thrill of ruining her night will be worthwhile.

I dressed quickly, applied minimal makeup and wore my hair down, all of which would annoy my mother, and I grinned at the thought of my mother’s face when she saw me. I waited in my room until I saw Lady Elizabeth and the others arrive. I hurried down stairs to meet my mother at the door. She looked at me, and the look on her face showed that I would pay for what I had one by wearing the dress. I looked at her and smiled saying with just the look on my face bring it on.

“You never listen do you?” my mother hissed as there was a knock at the door.

“Oh I listen, but not to you” I replied as she went to open the door. She just shook her head, plastered a smile on her face and opened the door.

Lady Elizabeth was wearing a pale blue dress which accentuated her petite figure and set off her blue eyes and golden blonde hair. Beside her was her husband Count Mayfare, he was wearing black tails. Behind them stood two men, one I recognised to be Count Ferson he was also wearing black tails, the other was considerably younger no more than a few years older than me, he was wearing deep blue tails, he had shaggy black hair that came to his chin, and light green eyes. My mother invited them into the foyer.

I walked toward Lady Elizabeth clasping her hand “Lady Elizabeth it’s so wonderful to see you”

“And you Annabella” she said grasping my hand in return. She turned to indicate Count Mayfare “you remember my husband”. “I do, Count Mayfare” I said as I curtsied

“Miss Annabella” he replied with a nod.

Lady Elizabeth spoke again “you also remember Count Ferson” she indicated the older man.

“Of cause, Count Ferson” I said as I curtsied.

Count Ferson spoke “you look beautiful Miss Annabella” he said as he kissed my hand and bowed to me. I cringed at the feel of him touching my hand.

Count Mayfare spoke “I would like to introduce to you my nephew Count Davenport” he indicated the younger gentleman in the deep blue tails.

Count Davenport took a step forward and bowed to me “Lady Annabella, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you. I have heard so much about you” he said as he kissed my hand. I didn’t cringe at him touching my hand, it oddly enough made my hand heat up.

“Shall we retire to the drawing room until dinner is served” my mother said

“Pleasure to meet you too” I said softly as I turned and led the way to the drawing room. Count Davenport followed closely behind me, next was Lady Elizabeth and Count Mayfare, my mother and Count Mayfare bringing up the rear. They were leaning close chatting about something I couldn’t hear, good I thought with my mother occupying him there is no need for me to go anywhere near him.

We entered the drawing room and everybody took their seats. My mother and Count Ferson arrived just as Count Mayfare began to speak. “Miss Annabella this is my nephew he just got back from studying abroad at Harvard University” he indicated Count Davenport.

“Really Count Davenport? I’ve never met anyone who went to Harvard. What did you study there?” I asked Count Davenport. He sat down in the chair across from me.

“I studied Philosophy and Physics. I hope to one day explain the universe"

“Aargh nonsense” Count Ferson interrupted “everybody knows that the earth is flat and there is nothing in the universe that needs explaining. You should dedicate your studies to something important like becoming a lawyer of a member of the church. And stop rattling on with nonsense like philosophy” Count Ferson said as he walked to the window.

I looked at Count Ferson then back to Count Davenport “I think it’s wonderful that you are studying what you want to and not what society thinks you should” I said to Count Davenport.

He looked at me “thank you Miss Annabella. Though I do like that Count Ferson can be so open to me about what he believes” he leaned closer and lowered his voice to a bare whisper “that way I show him his wrong when I discover otherwise” he whispered with a smirk.

“How gallant of you Count Davenport” I whispered with a smirk of my own.

“Dimitrius. Please call me Dimitri, Miss Annabella”

“Dimitri. Call me Anna” I said as I gazed into his green eyes they were as green as the leaves in the forest on a cold winter’s morning.

“Anna” he smiled and leaned back in his chair.

The minutes passed by and I was vaguely aware of someone talking. I couldn’t say who though. I was too distracted thinking about Count Davenport, Dimitri he said to call him. Dimitri it suited him so well. I smiled. I snapped back to reality at the sound of my name “Miss Annabella” it was Count Ferson he was standing in front of me.

“May I escort you to the dining room?” he asked as he held out his arm.

“Yes you may” I said as I stood and took his arm, even though I detested his touch. He began to lead the way to the dining room. When we reached the dining room I noticed that Count Davenport had escorted my mother.

I was surprised by the pang of jealousy, when I saw how he smiled at her.

My mother sat at the head of the table like she usually does, I sat to her right, Lady Elizabeth on the other side of me count Ferson sat at the other head of the table to his right sat Count Davenport and on the other side of count davenport sat count Mayfare.
