I did exactly what he said to do, I cleaned up my make-up and waited 5 more minutes before heading back to the drawing room. When I entered the drawing room the atmosphere seemed to be on high alert. Lady Elizabeth and Count Mayfare seemed to be in a heated conversation, my mother looked furious and Dimitri who stood by his word and was standing directly behind where Count Ferson was sitting looked decidedly uncomfortable. Count Ferson on the other hand appeared to be completely at ease with the entire situation as if he knew I would react this way, he looked calm cool and collected. He stood when he noticed that I returned to the room. I almost ran from the room when I saw him take a step in my direction, the look on my face must have scared him because he only took that one step, behind him I saw Dimitri move so that I could see him properly while appearing to look at Count Ferson.
Count Ferson spoke and the room became silent instantly as if someone had hit an off switch “Miss Annabella you took so long, are you well?” he asked
I was surprised to see in his eyes that he was sincere about his concern for my well being “yes Count Ferson I am well, or should I say yes my fiancé “ I said as I smiled to him but I was really looking at Dimitri.
Count Ferson looked astonished, I began to realise that he truly believed that I would reject t his proposal, which goes to show that he may actually know me. “You have accepted my proposal” he said softly.
I smiled a broader smile “yes I have” Count Ferson smiled and walked towards me. He kissed me swiftly on the cheek the opposite one to Dimitri then hugged me. I looked at Dimitri and he looked at me, I saw jealousy in his eyes and at that moment I knew he felt something for me. I looked back at him with longing in my eyes willing him to see that I wish it was him I was proclaiming to marry. It wasn’t until after Count Ferson released my from the hug that I saw the look on Lady Elizabeth’s face. It was a look of bewilderment which swiftly changed to comprehension, she looked from me to Dimitri and I realized that she saw the exchange between me and Dimitri.
After I accepted Count Ferson’s proposal the evening quickly wound down, now that the main excitement was over it was time for everyone to leave. I walked Lady Elizabeth, count Mayfare and Dimitri to the door while my mother remained in the drawing room with Count Ferson. When we reached the front door Count Mayfare left to collect the car leaving me alone with Lady Elizabeth and Dimitri.
Lady Elizabeth turned to face Dimitri and me and spoke, “Anna, Dimitri we need to talk... soon”
“About what aunty?” Dimitri asked innocently I was glad he spoke because I couldn’t form the words.
“About the mess you two have gotten yourselves into” she said
“We haven’t gotten ourselves into a mess”
“You two are in love and Anna has just agreed to marry a dear friend of mine, so I would say yes you are in a mess”
“We’re not-“I tried to say but was cut off by Dimitri
“So what if we are? It has nothing to do with you or anybody else” Dimitri said finally coming to the end of his ropes.
“You watch your tone boy or I will send you back to where you came from”
“don’t worry aunty I’m leaving tomorrow, so you see we won’t be in a ‘mess’ much longer” Dimitri said as Count Mayfare drove up with the car, lady Elizabeth said goodbye and got into the car.
I looked at Dimitri and asked “are you sure what we’re doing is a good idea?”
Dimitri took a step towards me “yes I am sure. Are you?”
I nodded “yeah” I said softly
“I’ll see you Tuesday okay? Don’t forget Damon Nomad”
“I'll remember, I’ll see you Tuesday” I said
Dimitri leaned forward and whispered in my ear “lady Elizabeth will keep this to herself, don’t worry”
“I won’t” I whispered back to him.
He leaned back and turned around seeing Lady Elizabeth watching us he turned back to me and dropped a quick kiss onto my cheek, before jogging down the steps and hopping into the car.
I went back inside and instead of going back into the drawing room I went up stairs and went straight to bed.
