I was running faster and faster but still he was getting close. I’m not going to make it I thought to myself. The bridge was now less than 100metres away, but the man chasing me was closer still. I don’t know who he is, I can’t see his face it was obscured by his coat, it was black and went from his ankles to chin with the collar bridging his nose. All I could see of his face was his eyes. They were red in the light of the moon, and they were filled with rage. Where was Dimitri I thought he said he would be back in an hour. The bridge was so close now I could smell the salt water flowing beneath it. I’m going to make it just as the thought was finished something tackled me from behind. I was falling. Then everything was black. I woke in my bed, covered from head to toe in sweat. Just a dream I told myself. A dream. I was too wound up to go back to sleep, so I decided to go down stairs and get an early start on the day. I was almost at the bottom of the stairs when I heard voices coming from my mother’s study. I crept to the door and listened, it sounded like two people were arguing. I recognised the sound of my mother’s voice instantly, the other voice was cold and it gave me the creeps, it was Count Ferson. “I hope you don’t plan on going back on our deal Fiona” Count Ferson said. “I most certainly am not. Are you planning on going back on it?” she countered. “No” he said outraged as if the thought had never crossed his mind “I am a man of my word”. What deal? I wondered to myself, my confusion was put to rest when Count Ferson spoke again. ”She must be tamed. I like a woman who is wild, but not in public. That stunt she pulled last night will not happen again” Count Ferson Said “It won’t happen again. You’ll see. When she’s married she will realise that she must be dedicated to being a good and obedient wife” Fiona said “Good because if she embarrasses me again I will not put up with it, and if she and I are not wed by July 7th... well let’s just say I won’t be happy” Count Ferson said by the tone of his voice I could have sworn that he was sneering at my mother. “all will be good Count you have my word on that” Fiona said trying to make peace “yes it will because if you daughter does not marry me I will not continue to support you. Then we’ll see how long you survive before you are out on the street” Count Ferson Said There were footsteps headed towards the door. I quickly moved behind the staircase where I could hear them but they could not see me. Count Ferson exited the room first followed closely by my mother. They were still talking. “You will see Count Ferson it will all work out, you must be patient and...” I didn’t hear the rest of their conversation, their voices faded away as they left.
I stayed behind the staircase for a few more minutes until I knew for sure that the coast was clear. There was no way of knowing what my mother and Count Ferson would have done to ne had they known I’d been listening to their conversation. Everything that has been going on lately finally makes sense. My mother telling me that Count Ferson was a wonderful and generous man. Her telling me I won’t be her problem much longer. Her saying that anyone would be lucky to be married to him. And finally the staged dinner last night where everyone except Dimitri knew what was going on. Oh no maybe he did know what was going on maybe Count Ferson put him up too it, maybe he was testing me to see if I would up and leave with someone else. I don’t know I’m so confused. I don’t know what’s going on, but there are a few things I am certain of. The first; I cannot marry Count Ferson. The second; I will not be leaving with Dimitri and finally I have to leave and get away from here but I’m going to do it on my own.
