"Then break the spell!" I screamed. Lampton was watching me now, his eyes getting wetter by the second. He knew what was going to happen, I could see it in his eyes.
"Doesn't work like that." He croaked. "Time's up, Princess."
"No!" I screamed. "No, I did it within half an hour. You have to keep up your end of the bargain!"
A croaky laugh filled the air around me and Lampton. "Time is up. Say goodbye"
My breathing was getting heavy now. "No" I started to repeat but something in Lampton's face told me to stop. His face was deadly still, tears streaming down his face, but he was watching me intently.
"I love you, Freya" He whispered weakly and he started to fade. Right before my eyes he was becoming transparent. His tears continued to fall as mine began falling too. He was nearly gone and there was nothing I could do about it.
"I love you, Lampton" I whispered, not wanting him to go without knowing, and he smiled. And despite the moment, it was full of pure joy. I had told him something which he had wanted to hear for a long time and maybe I was just a little too late. When Lampton had gone, vanished, I kneeled there still before the now empty chair and I wept. I had never cried so much before in my life and it broke my heart.
"Look what you've done." He croaked.
What had I done? I had found Lampton, hadn't I? Surely I had found him within half an hour and I was being punished.
"What have I done?" I said between the hiccups and tears.
"Little Princey is gone and it is all your fault" He croaked, appearing on the other side of the chair.
"Where is he?" I growled now.
He smiled. "Wouldn't you like to know?"
"Yes. Tell me" I growled again. I stumbled to my feet and started walking towards him. "Where. Is. He?"
"He may be alive but not for long." He grinned.
I was closer to him now, so close. "Where is Lampton?" I said through gritted teeth.
"Somewhere" He shrugged.
That wasn't an answer I was looking for so I lunged towards him. My hands led the way but when I was supposed to have grabbed him my hands came up empty and I fell to the muddy floor.
He laughed from somewhere behind me. "You think everything is too easy, Princess"
I turned, he was standing by the door now, so I ran towards him again. He ran up the stairs as I did and slammed the door behind him. I carried on running, threw myself up the stairs and into the door. Not only was it locked but it forced me back onto the floor.
"Magic again, Princess." He laughed from above. "Goodnight, Miss Freya"
Goodnight? I turned round in a circle just in time to see smoke rising from the floor, seeping out of the walls and falling from the boards above me. I didn't scream, I didn't have time to. The smoke was making me drowsy, my eyes began to droop, and it seemed like time slowed as I fell to the floor.
