Anna sat at the table, her long blonde fringe covering her eyes, with her head down. They didn't think she was listening but she was, and beneath her hair and long eyelashes she was watching too.
"I think the plan is foolproof" One of the cloaked men around the table said. She knew his name. It was Gabe, he was married and had three children.
"You have children, Gabe," Anna said slowly. "And you want to send me to my death? Your middle child, Lily, is the same age as me. What if I was her? Would you send her to her death?"
"Yes" Gabe replied.
"Liar" Anna growled getting to her feet. She couldn't go anywhere, her hands and feet were chained to a hoop on the ground.
"Sit down, child" Gabe said and she did. She was already on trial, what more could she do? The symbol on her palm burnt like it was fresh. Like it was mere hours ago that she got marked wrongly for a crime she didn't do. Like it was minutes ago that she watched as her family was murdered. The mark on her hand was burnt into her skin like she was cattle. A capital 'M' for murderer and a circle round it to say that she was convicted but they didn't have proof. All they had was Anna, bleeding, unconscious in her dead mother's arms. She didn't remember a thing.
"Agreed! She goes to the land of no return" Another of the cloaked men announced.
Anna knew of this place, she knew perhaps too much of this place, and her grandfather had once escaped from there. She would be prepared for the worst.
