"What do you mean save him?" I asked.
"I'll tell you later" Scruff said, watching Fang intently.
"Tell her now, Brother" Fang smiled slightly and it wasn't like before, menacing and scary, it was truthful and sincere.
Scruff shook his head but I needed answers and I needed them soon. I was the key? To what?
"The key to his heart" Alina whispered.
"His heart?" I whispered back.
Scruff nodded and turned to look at me. He was close to tears, so close, but he nodded again. I moved towards him, got to my knees before him then wrapped my arms round his soft neck. Letting out a quiet whine, he nestled his face into my shoulder.
"I'm sorry" He whispered.
"He's been waiting for you for a long time, Nova" Alina said.
"You are the key to a life he never wanted. A life I brought them into because I was in love" Fang added. I looked up, Fang and Alina were watching us. Alina had tears in her eyes and that was a first for me, actually seeing a wolf cry. "Without you, he will be stuck like this forever. You bring him hope. Hope to break free from this life"
As I stood up, Scruff moved away from me, towards Alina and Fang. They wasn't defensive now, they didn't tackle him down. They let Scruff get closer and then he stood there, inches from Fang, and together they both bowed. In sync, with their noses close, and their eyes level.
"A sign of acceptance. A sign of equilibrium. They are the same, brothers, and neither is better than the other" Red's voice whispered in my ear. I nodded, I was grateful for her input this time. Alina noticed my nod and looked at me confused, her head turned to the side.
"You hear her, don't you?" She asked, walking towards me. "You hear Little Red Riding Hood?"
"It's just my memories of her, things I remember her saying" I lied, with a shrug.
She shook her head. "No, you hear her. Your friend talks to you"
"What does she say, Nova?" Fang asked.
"Just tells me things. If I'm in danger, if I'm safe, what you two just did. Nothing important really" I shrugged.
"See." Scruff gloated. "Isn't she amazing?"
"What? What are you going on about? I hear my best friend's voice in my head. My best friend talks to me and that is amazing?" I asked.
Grinning, Scruff nodded. "You are amazing, Nova. You just don't realise it yet"
"How am I amazing?" I asked, annoyed.
Scruff looked around, making sure no one was there, and then he smiled at me and shared a secret he had kept for a long time, "You have wolf traits"
