Chapter 1 - Axton

The growling took on an annoying tone after a while and no one seemed to shut the thing up. It had been about an hour and I had been watching the dog the whole time, that dog. It was alone, standing on the steps of the library, and growling at everyone who passed. Then came the barking when it saw ChiChi, my sister's rat of a dog. ChiChi turned her nose up at the dog when she noticed that he was barking at her. Chi was like the dog version of my sister - a snobby cow. It sucked having to dog-sit because I wasn't aloud to go out now without it. Apparently she barked too much when I left. I didn't like being seen with a chihuahua, I'm not the sort of person you would expect to have one. I'm tall and built with dark eyes and hair. "Aw! What a cutie!" A girl fussed over Chi as I watched the dog across the road. I didn't know the breed of the dog but I still watched. Then a girl came out of the library, a book in her arms. What she was wearing caught me as strange. She was wearing a white thin strap dress with a long thin-looking pink cardigan over the top and her shoes, they were flip-flops. That would be normal, I guess, if it wasn't the middle of winter. It was almost -1 degrees out. She looked over at the dog, smiled slightly, then said something. The dog looked round at her but stayed where he was then she laughed. The dog was watching Chi still. The girl noticed it too and laughed again, heading in our direction. It didn't take long for her to get to us. "Hi," She said, her voice was sweet. "Can my dog say hi to yours?" I nodded, captivated by her rust coloured eyes. She had long brown hair, the tips were dyed bright pink, and she was tiny, so petite. "Woody, come" She said and he came bounding towards us. He was even bigger up close. He was fully black other than the small patch of brown on his face. "What is it?" I asked and she laughed. "HE is a Tibetan mastiff. This is Woody" She replied, smiling sweetly. "This is ChiChi but I just call her Chi, she prefers it like that. She's my sister's rat" I said as Woody and Chi sniffed each other's faces. "Rat?" "Yeah" I shrugged. "I wouldn't call her that if I were you." The girl said, seriously. "Well you aren't me" I smiled, my odd half smile, which made her smile. I was in an accident when I was younger and it involved an operation or two on my face so my smiles are half smiles all the time, the other side of the smile just never comes up. "It hurts doesn't it?" She asked out of the blue. "Huh?" "You had an operation when you were younger." She stated. "You smile by pulling only one side of your mouth up, whereas other people smile on both sides. It hurts you to smile like normal. It hurts to smile like before, sorry, because that is normal for you." When she stopped talking she smiled. I just looked at her in shock. I realised who she was then. She went to my High School but no one liked her, no one ever got to know her. Her name was Indy. They say she knows everything about everyone, they call her a creep. "You're good." I smiled back. "Not really, you can see it brings you pain" She shrugged. "When you smile your right eye squints slightly." "Observant" I commented. She nodded then smiled. "To most I'm weird... Most including you, it took a while for you to realise who I was and when you did, you realised you may have been mistaken about me. Your eyes lit up when you realised. Of course I know who you are, Axton. Popular guy at school, rich guy at home and you hate it all." She had a sarcastic smirk on her face. I was intrigued now. "What about you then?" I asked. She shook her head once. "That is not how it works, Axton" She teased. I didn't know why I hadn't spoken to her before, she seemed like a nice girl, and I wanted to know all about her. There was something about her that I hadn't noticed before which was different. She wasn't like some of the bimbos that hung around with the guys I knew. There seemed a secret, something that she was hiding, that set her apart from everyone ... Let's just say curiosity got the best of me ...
