EXODUS 21:4-5 (laws about slaves, as given to Moses directly from god)
4. If his master gives him (the slave) a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he (the slave) shall go out alone (after his period of slavery is up). 5. But if the slave plainly says 'I love my master, my wife and my children. I shall not go out free.'
Then the master keeps him as long as he wants, but the slave gets to stay with his family.
