I'm half way through the old testament and finding it increasingly hard to finish. It's so depressing!
So in the beginning god created Adam and Eve, who were walking talking humans.. Then they had lots of kids etc.. Then there were fall outs and silly laws, reasonable laws and offensive laws..
Then god spread his creation around the world.. But I get the impression that when this was written, the world was a very small place (as far as the authors were aware... and also flat)..
Of all the people of the world, who were created equal, god (like a bad movie franchise) only ever visits one geographical region and a select bunch of people... No mention of the rest of the world, just plodding along happily giving praise to frogs and painting pictures in caves.
That isn't the most depressing aspect.. It's all the bloody fighting! No wonder the middle east is so messed up! Let's say god is real... Then he spent a lot of his time sanctioning war, murder rape and slavery, instructing his followers to go around invading, kill their enemies and the odd time he lends a hand for reasons of jealousy or land.. Now let's assume god isn't real, then he was a handy tool to do all the above in his name... For reasons of jealousy, or land.. Bit of a lose/lose situation really
I did find an ironic part in Kings when the man of god was showing the baal followers his god was better than theirs. They both put a bull on an alter, (he soaked his in water) and the first one to spontaneously combust had the most powerful god, obviously his went up like a roman candle.. But the point is, if the experiment was good enough then to prove the ineptitude of baal.. How's about running it again for them both..
Can't wait till part two when it gets all lovey dovey
