Early written bibles (that included new testament) were in Greek, which made no distinction between lower or upper case, had no punctuation and had no spaces between words.
This made life hard, even for the most literate slave scribe, tasked with making copies. So even if he didn't have his own reasons to alter the text, glaring differences would quickly develop.
Here's two examples to consider, albeit in English, but the point remains the same:

Lastnightatdinnerisawabundanceonthetable
To add to the confusion these writings would then be spread across the land to be read aloud to groups of illiterates so the reader expressed his version of what was written, and who could argue with him?
