Dear diary,
Today father made an unusual purchase... It was a telephone! Our Uncle Edward has one too.
I was very well behaved today, except my nanny did moan a bit when I went on my rocking horse and crumpled my skirts. "You'll have a lot of ironing to do when your older!" she exclaimed. The nanny says things like that a lot. She says it's to prepare me for the outside world that awaits...
That afternoon father sent his maid upstairs with a gift for me. It wasn't my birthday, but I dare not ask him what it was for. When I opened it, it was a book: Little Red Riding Hood! I collected those story books, father got me them occasionally, if I was good.
That evening mother shouted me and told me to go downstairs. On my way down I was nervous, I was only called down if I was bad. My mistress and nanny both said I did good today.
It turns out father wanted me to have a go on the telephone thing he bought. We phoned Uncle Edward, but Polly ( my cousin ) picked up. For a few minuets we talked about school and things but then father took it off me. I had a kiss of mother and father and was sent to bed with an envelope.
In the envelope was a letter from Matthew ( my brother )! It says he will return home from boarding school next week as it is there break-week. I love Mattie and miss him dearly when he is away...
Oh no! It's father! If he sees me up he'll shout! I so detest it when he shouts! Got to go, more tomorrow!
