Sitting at the zoo I watched a father and his young daughter moving between the various exhibits of animals. Her excitement was obvious as she would walk holding her father's hand, then run off to look closely at a lion or a monkey, only to return and take her father's hand again as they continued to walk. This continued for the better part of thirty minutes, at which point I felt the need to compliment the father on how well his daughter behaved.

"Your daughter comes right back to you every time without even a word from you. What's your secret?" I asked, hoping from some glimpse of parental wisdom.

He looked at me, smiled, and said,

"I know when to let go."
