Her words slipped out and hung there in the air, but not long enough for her to snatch them back. Like predator drones, she could see they hit their mark. Gravity attacked Charlie's face. It crumpled and creased in on itself. Charlie seemed to shrink, expelled of air as the words lodged in the crevices of his brain. She knew, beyond doubting that her words would reside there forever. Take root, reshaping his reality- her reality. Charlie slumped back against the chair and hung his head. His hand, in slow motion, reached up to claw at his head as if to extract the knowledge now residing there. She watched the effect of her words with horror. Her heart began to beat wildly out of her chest. What was going to happen now? Charlie heaved deep, and a low, quiet moan drifted out. He shuddered then placed both hands on the table. She could see they were trembling. Slowly, he raised his head to look at her. His gaze hit her like a ton of bricks. This was a man transformed before her. Her words, like laser beams, had gone in and done quick work. And she knew, beyond a shadow, that his metamorphosis was irreparable. Charlie slowly pushed back his chair and stood from the table. He turned his back to her, and silently....

walked out of her life.
