Sadie tried her best to sound nonchalant.

"I don't know what you're talking about. He left? He didn't tell me anything. He didn't say anything to you?"

"OK, that's the way you wanna play this. Well, I sure as hell hope he's coming back. We do NEED him you know. You get that right?"

"Of course. Let me call him and see what he's up to."

"Tried that, he's not answering. Something happened and I'm pretty sure I know what it is. You'd better fix this Sadie or we're back to the drawing board. Months of planning shot to shit."

Sadie could hear the anger in Jude's voice rising. She didn't blame him really. She calculated whether or not she could feasibly stick to her story. Charlie normally would tell her where he was going. And everyone knew that leaving the compound in broad daylight at this stage in the game was way too risky. Not something Charlie would do under normal circumstances. But Jude had no basis of fact to hold her responsible. She decided to stick- for now. If the scales tipped she could reevaluate. If they could find someone to replace Charlie quickly Jude would calm down.

"I'll do what I can. How is Beth? Ya know, your ex-wife? Is it possible she took a turn for the worse?"

Maybe he went to go see her."

Apparently Jude hadn't thought of that.

"Shit! I hadn't heard anything. You keep trying to contact Charlie. I'll see what I can find out about Beth. Let's touch base tonight."

Sadie let out a gasp of air as she set the phone down. This was definitely going to buy her some time. Beth was in pretty bad shape and the people around her were intent on keeping Jude out of her life - what she had left of it anyway. It would take some jumping through hoops to get the information he was looking for. What time was it in America any way? One, two in the morning. He'd have to sit tight for awhile. Sadie bit her lip and stared at the old photos on the table. Images of a fresh faced, nineteen year old girl hamming it up with a much older man, obviously smitten. Shit, what had she done? All those many years ago and here, today. Sadie heaved a sigh and lifted her head to the ceiling. Fuck, she was gonna have to get some anxiety meds to get her through this.
