As she saw him, she speeded up. She was a full twenty paces from him when she said; "how could you?" She spoke forcefully, but not loudly- respecting how far sound carried in the quiet air of the gardens. He waited until she was nearer to answer. "Please, please let me..." he held his hands out pleadingly towards her, but she would not let him finish. "No!" she almost spat out, "no excuses! Nothing will come close to the damage you've done with this" She stood in front of him, eyes glaring, hands on hips. "as far as he's concerned, it's all over now. No more work, not until HE thinks it's safe". She growled in frustration and ran her fingers through her messy auburn hair.
"Charlotte", he said quietly, "he would have found out eventually, we wouldn't have been able to hide it forever". He moved forward and stood in front of her. "I know you said you'd never forgive me if I told him, but, I just couldn't stop thinking about how I would feel if something happened to you; to you both". He laid his hand carefully on her stomach and looked into her eyes.
