There was a young boy who played in the grass And careless was he, as he let the time pass He caught bullfrogs and fireflies As he stared into night skies

He had no worries as a boy that played in the grass

Then one day the boy met Mary, a girl He loved this girl and made her his world They laughed and loved as they watched the time pass He had no idea that soon darkness will cast

He only cared for Mary, the girl was his world

The month was June 1944 He had no choice but to enlist in the war He fought back tears as the war zone was braved Somehow he new France needed to be saved

He had to leave Mary and fight this war

The men soon came home tired and used Wounded and sick they were bombed and abused She watched and waited for her man to see Mary all dressed up, waiting as pretty as can be

She waited all night without her husband to be

She left for home feeling I'll and forgotten As his bride to be, she felt almost rotten Mary couldn't accept that he was gone Especially with America proud as she won Why hasn't he phoned or written he was late? Doesn't he know that here awaits his date?

Eight months went by and not one sight Still she believed that he was alive and with fight Then one day a knock came to her door It was a short mailman with a letter from the corps

She bought bad news with no transaction Her dear soldier was missing in action

There was never another that received her love She knew he was waiting up above Watching as she tossed and turned at night Never sleeping, her passion burned so bright

She gave him her very best Until her soul was put to rest And now Mary's grave is all that lasts As she again meets a boy that plays in the grass
