1 January 2012

2012 will, as comes every four years, offer many of us the right to choose our next leader. How we do this is becoming almost as important as the event itself.

What is the basis for determining a great leader? Is it charisma, charm, grandiloquent speech? Possibly not, as 'like ability' does not nearly qualify one to lead.

What does qualify, I believe, is one's ability to solve and resolve problems. A problem solver is a leader in every sense, whether he holds a position or not.

The process by which we choose our leaders should largely be based upon the testimony of the aspiring leader. Has he (she) shown an ability to solve problems? Does he have a testimony that backs his position? We can argue a man's doctrine until we are blue in the face, but we cannot argue his testimony. How can any man lead you where he has not been? He cannot! His life is his testimony!

Pompous flowery speech does not make a leader anymore than owning a football makes one a candidate for the NFL, yet we Americans have been mesmerized by anyone who speaks well. While this is relative, it isn't the bottom line.

The coming election is important, but 'how' we determine our leader is more important than the event itself, as testimony, not rhetoric, should be the measuring stick.
