Chapter 1
Looking out at the crowd, I felt exhilarated. Everyone was cheering after I got done with my first song. My heart was beating a mile a minute. My smile couldn't of gotten any bigger. This was the biggest crowd I have ever sung in front of. I raised my hand up and pointed my pointer finger. I was showing them that they were my number one. I would be nothing without my fans. All my songs would go to waste. My guitar would just sit in the corner of my room, collecting dust. They are the best!
"Morgan! Morgan! Morgan! Morgan!" They chanted. My eyes shot open to see my mom standing over me.
"Morgan, you have to get up." She said. I rolled my eyes. One day I will be a singer. I'll be just like Carrie Underwood when I get a little older. I'm only sixteen but I can sing my heart out. I just haven't gotten discovered yet. "Did you hear me? If you don't get up then you'll be late." My mom said again. I rolled my eyes and jumped out of bed. I checked the time and it said that it was eight-thirty. I didn't have time to hop in the shower. I have to be at work at nine o'clock. I throw on my baby blue Sweet Tooth Bakery shirt on and pull my hair into a bun. I slip my kakis on and put on my Sperry's after that. My work uniform isn't too bad. I like the color blue and kakis make my butt look good, so it's kind of a win win situation. I walk into the kitchen and snag a piece of toast that was on my dads plate.
"Ya snooze, ya lose." I said to him as he read the paper. He just smiled.
"Have a good day, baby girl." He said to me as I kissed his cheek.
"One minute late!" The owner said as I walked into Sweet Tooth. I just gave her a sugar coated smile. I've known her for my whole life. She is my grandmas best friend. I started working here last year during the summer. A summer job turned into a full time job. I make the cupcakes here and it's my get away from everything. My boyfriend jokes that he has to call the bakery instead of my cellphone to get in touch with me. He stops by everyday at eleven o'clock after his physical therapy sessions. He's a pitcher on the baseball team and he tore his shoulder tendon. It happened almost a year ago and he has to go to physical therapy now. He orders a cupcake every time he comes in. Unless it's in the winter, then he orders hot chocolate. In the winter I work here after school everyday. I want to open my own bakery one day. That is, if I don't become a famous singer.
I turn on the radio when I get in the kitchen. I start making the batter for the cupcakes when Carrie Underwood's song Blown Away comes on. I turn it up and start singing along. I'm twirling around and throwing ingredients into the bowl when a cough comes from the door. I can barely hear it over the music. I glance at the door and there was a boy that looked a year older than me. He's grinning at me and I just laugh. I didn't know what else to do. What can I say? I was singing and dancing. "Can I help you?" I asked not unkindly. "Just looking for a fluted tube pan." He said and started looking through the drawers. "Well, you're not going to find it in there. I'm Morgan by the way." I said and went to the back of the kitchen. Mrs. Sheffield must be making a pound cake. "I'm Jared. My grandma sent me back here. I honestly have no idea what kind of pan it is." He said and we laugh. I glance back at him and my breath catches. He has the prettiest teeth ever. They're white and completely straight. His brown slightly wavy hair reaches his ears. His green eyes are shining back at me as he smiles. His yellow polo was hugging his chest and showing off his muscular arms. He wasn't ripped but he had broad shoulders and there was definitely definition in his arms. His loose jeans fit him perfectly in a way I couldn't explain. I bit my lip and realized I was just staring at him. I smiled over my shoulder when he looked at me.
"Here you go." I said as I grabbed a pan from the drawers. "So are you working here or what?" I asked as he leaned against the counter.
"Nah, just helping out today. Baking isn't really for me. I do need some extra money though. I might ask her if I could do the register or something."
"It's really fun here. The best first job ever. So Mrs. Sheffield is your grandma?"
"Yeah." He said as he scratched at something on his arm.
"How come I've never seen you here before? Or seen you at all? Our grandma's are best friends." I said and made my way back to my cupcakes. I started putting the batter into the liners. I needed to keep busy so I wouldn't stare at him. He was very good looking and I couldn't help but to appreciate it.
"Your grandma is Mrs. Terry? You look just like her."
"Do I have to do everything myself? Where's that pan?" Mrs. Sheffield said as she walks through the door. She eyes Jared then the pan in his hand. "Well, boy?" Jared smiles at me as he walks out of the kitchen.
"I gotta straighten that boy out." She says and winks at me.
Two hours later I was cleaning off the tables that people sit at.
"So Morgan, I'm about to go out to lunch. Want to come?" Jared asked.
"I would but my lunch isn't until twelve-thirty." I said. I still had an hour and a half.
"Oh, that sucks. I would wait but a few of my friends have already made plans."
"Oh, maybe some other time." I said as the bell above the door rang. I glanced up and Tony was standing in front of me. He's my boyfriend and we've been dating for three months. He kissed me on my cheek and then sat down at a table. He was wearing a tight grey shirt with black basketball shorts. His brown hair was a buzz cut with a mohawk. I hate big mohawks. I only like the little ones people do with buzz cuts. Apparently it's a baseball thing. All the pitchers on the baseball team have buzz cuts with mohawks. I kind of like them.
"So, raincheck?" Jared said. I almost forgot he was standing there.
"Definitely." I said as I started to walk to Tony.
"How was physical therapy?" I asked.
"It sucked. I want my shoulder to hurry up and get better." Tony said. I walked behind him and started rubbing circles in his back.
"These things take time. Just be lucky that you can still play baseball. It could of been much worse. You'll be brand new by the time the season starts back up."
"Brand new? No, I'll be fat by the time season starts back up. If I keep coming here and getting a cupcake every day, I'll weigh three hundred pounds." He said and grinned up at me. I smiled and kissed his forehead while he was still looking up.
"Does that mean that you don't want the cupcake?"
"Of course not! I definitely want the cupcake. You make the best ones. I can't get enough of your cupcakes." He said then groaned. "That sounded like I was coming onto you." I just laughed and asked him what kind of cupcake he wanted.
"Surprise me." He said with a smile. I laughed and nodded my head as I made my way to the kitchen. Jared was getting on his coat as I walked past him.
"You're dating Tony?" Jared asked.
"You know him?"
"Yeah. Have you met his parents yet?"
"No, why? Are his parents mean or something?"
"Of course not, they're really nice. Has he met yours?"
"Yeah, like a week ago. I was going to meet his parents sometime in the next two weeks. Do you not like him?" I asked suspiciously.
"He's a pretty good friend of mine actually."
"Why don't you go say hi?"
"I've really got to get to lunch." He said then bolted out th out of the door. That was really strange. I wonder why they didn't say anything to each other.
