Chapter 1 (part5)
"You're actually early this morning." Mrs. Sheffield said as I walked into Sweet Tooth the next morning. I smiled and checked the clock. I was two minutes early. We've had that joke going since I first started working here. Either I was late or I was early. I walked into the kitchen and Jared was poking around in the refrigerator. He looked up and smiled at me. I smiled back as I put my apron on.
"Hey." I said lamely. I mentally smacked myself when I said it.
"Hey, are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine, why?"
"I heard about your breakup with Tony." The air whooshed out of my lungs. What's he talking about? Did canceling our plans mean that he was breaking up with me?
"What?" I asked and stared dumbly at him.
"He didn't... Break up with you?" He asked.
"Um, no. Did he tell you he did?"
"No, I was just assuming." He said quickly, a little too quickly.
"What aren't you telling me?"
"I don't know about anything. I just thought..." He said and looked anywhere but me. Something is up. "I'm going to go help grandma..." He faded out and walked away. He definitely wasn't being completely honest with me. I'm going to find out what he meant by that. I walked out of the kitchen and Mrs. Sheffield and Jared were talking in hushed tones. When they saw me though, they completely stopped talking.
"What aren't the both of you telling me?" I asked accusingly. I knew Mrs. Sheffield didn't have anything to do with it, but it couldn't hurt to ask.
"Don't drag me into this." She grumbled then walked to the front desk. She hardly ever smiled and she grumbled a lot. She is one of the sweetest ladies though. She can't resist my charm. I've caught her trying not to smile on more than one occasion.
"Do you want to tell me what I want to know?" I asked Jared when it was just us.
"I really don't know what you're talking about. He just sounded pretty glum last night after he had to cancel. I was just assuming."
"You better as heck be just assuming. I'm a baker and have many things in that kitchen that I can come after you with." I said and pinned him with a stern stare.
"Oh really? You mean you're going to throw some sugar and sprinkles in my face?" He said with a huge grin. I tried very hard but couldn't stop myself from laughing. That's exactly what I would've done. I don't really work with many sharp objects.
"Shut up." I said playfully and beamed at him.
"I should probably get back to work." He said and started to walk away.
"You're working here now?"
"Yeah, I get to clean tables." He grumbled and sulked back to the font of the store. I walked away laughing at him.
