Another of my friends visited the doctor and saw one of her friends in the waiting room. Her friend is rather overweight and very jolly, her friend was called into the doctor first. In those days we waited on chairs which were lined up against the wall outside the consulting room. Celia, my friend, told me what happened next. She said "all went quiet when we heard noises from in the doctors room. There was a loud grunt followed by hysterical laughter then they heard the doctors voice saying Mrs Donovan, please!" after a while the lady emerged, rather red faced, then she left. Later when Celia met her again she explained. She had gone to the surgery to hopefully have her painful haemorrhoids treated. The doctor told her to lie on the couch facing the wall, on her side, with her legs bent, so he could examine her. He crouched down but wasn't satisfied with the position she was in and so told her to move nearer to the edge of the consulting couch so that he could examine her more easily. She moved too far, toppled off of the bed and landed on top of him, pinning him down. Because of her bulk and the hysterical laughter, it took her a while to be able to move. The doctor, although not a small man, didn't have the power to move her.
It must be at least 35 years since this happened but the memory of it still makes me laugh.
