I say goodbye to the family and start another day of factory rules and factory tools and fools in factory grey.
The children will be leaving soon school things in disarray I think they care - I'm never there although they never say. But I wont work here much longer this life is not for me, We'll all live in a houseboat Or a cottage by the sea. Or move up to the highlands And buy a piece of land And I'll learn how to use a plough And we'll walk hand in hand.
I say goodbye to my wife at home and start another day Of factory rules and factory tools and fools in factory grey.
The children are not children now They have lives of their own, I turned around one day and found That they were fully grown. But I wont work here much longer I'm not a factory hand We'll spend some time together The kids will understand. We'll buy a little bungalow or convert an old windmill We'll gather corn and watch the dawn For us, time will stand still.
I close the door of the empty house and start another day Of factory rules and factory tools and fools in factory grey.
But I wont work here much longer I'm soon due to retire I didn't see, life flash by me My dreams a funeral pyre. I don't see much of my grandsons now Can't blame them in a way Why come and see someone like me An old fool in factory grey.
Tom May
Although Tom worked in a factory when he was a young man, its many years since he did but obviously the memories remained!
