We both knew that this moment would come
We both knew that a time would come when You and I could no longer live in this fragile fantasy; Where we lay for hours in the warm, midday sun, With the thistledowns feathery tips Swaying softly above our peaceful heads, and, Cradled in the warm bends of each others arm, We would watch the world drift by slowly, Lulled into quiet, dreamless sleep By the rush of the trees, The warm vapour of summer, And the draw of each others presence
Perhaps, with the ticking of the pocket watch Slowed to a hazy beat in our beautiful, barefoot dance Upon the tufted meadow grass, We expected to have much more time, But, nonetheless, here we are, Clutching each others shivering bodies In the bitter rain, under a miserable sky And I have never seen such desperate passion in your eyes As my heart slows to a lulling rush
We both knew it had to happen, When the band on your finger became law And the pretty, simple girl you promised to love Becomes your own, And you must leave me, and never return. Do you promise me you will never return?
For a fleeting second, All of the world pauses in its dusky ballet, And, suspended in time, quietens In honour of out last moment in each others arms. I clutch your neck, feeling the raindrops run down my arms, Icy and numbing. Within the confines of your soft, brown eyes, I see a desperate passion That makes my whole body throb with a love I have never felt before. I want nothing more than to stay here, Suspended between the glassy raindrops, And watch you look at me, Knowing me, Cradling me in your soft arms. Why is it we must leave? Why is it that for a fleeting moment, You find a person that slows time for you, And takes away the misery And then, come the rainfall, They must leave.
I kiss you like I have never kissed you before, And feel your clutch tighten around my body I feel so small, So fragile, Like a tiny baby bird.
Then, there in the rain, I watch as you walk off, over the moor And leave forever
I love you
