The silver hour comes in wreaths and boughs,
Winding round our ankles
Like smoke from the fire
You'll never see it coming
I swear to god
You'll never feel it,
But when you wake in the morning,
You'll see the pearly smears on your feet,
And there's nothing you can do
I never saw it.
I was young and in love,
And we were walking home in the small hours
Of November
Holding hands and stepping in time
Slowing in a dance on the sidewalk.
We kissed, alone, with
Pinched winter cheeks in fur collars,
Icy hands stroking and holding
And beneath the layers of wool and felt,
Button loops and silk,
My heart beat slower and slower,
As my heavy heart sunk.
I never saw it
But I know exactly what happened.
There, together in the silver hour.
I know that it gathered,
A lustrous mist,
And curled, cold as a sigh
Around my feet and legs.
I know, that the silvery haze
Stained my skin,
And bit deep into me
But I didn't feel it in the bitter November air
It works its way up,
And sinks deep into your being
Where it seeps up to your heart
Slowly stiffening and slowing it,
And soon, you won't feel quite right,
And you won't want to look at him,
And the words won't sound right
When you whisper them into his neck.
The glint in his eye is gone,
And his bitten red lips don't look so kissable.
You don't want him to say a word,
Because...
It will make everything move faster
You love him, you know do
Or...
You did?
What happened?
You've loved each other for years,
Since you left girlhood behind
And he placed a golden band around you both
I swear to god, you'll never see it coming
You'll never feel it,
Until its too late.
