I’d like to plan the world a trench And mark it out with string Get out spades and whet the blades Lift up the turfing.
I’d like to teach the world to dig In perfect stratigraphy I’d like to hold finds in my arms And interpret through analogy.
I’d like to see the whole dig team All trowelling side by side And hear them scraping through the soils Ah, postholes throughout the land.
(That’s the words I hear) I’d like to teach the world to dig (That archaeologists call today) In perfect stratigraphy.
I’d like to teach the world to dig In perfect stratigraphy.
I’d like to plan the world a trench And mark it out with string Get out spades and whet the blades Lift up the turfing.
