part 2
I could feel the life being drained out of me as I walked up the worn out walkway to my house, that black truck was sitting in the driveway, my moms boyfriend was here again. I let out a long sigh, turned the doorknob, and stepped inside. My plan was always to avoid Doug, my moms boyfriend, whatever way I could. I took a quick look around and could hear him in the kitchen so I ran down the hall toward the closet door. The door creaked a little as I opened it, so I looked behind me to make sure he hadn't came out of the kitchen. Nope, was still in there. I took a step inside the closet and reached up grabbing the cord to pull down the attic door. The ladder slid down and I started up it toward my room. I let my book bag slip to the floor and I walked over to the window, looking out at the large tree in our backyard. I reached for the cd player my grandpa had given me for christmas and put the headphones on. The wood was hard against the back of my head, but I was kind of comfortable. I just closed my eyes and let the best of Three Days Grace fill my ears.
I must have fallen asleep, I woke up about 7:40 in the morning, I was late for school. I climbed down the ladder and went to the bathroom to clean myself up. The mirror was fogged when I got out of the shower, I wiped a small part off so I could look in it. Blue eyes, messy hair, and freckles. I could be cute, I honestly just don't care enough to try. Quickly I dried off and got dressed. I wore the usual, black shirt with long sleeves, light jeans with tears in them, and my vans. I threw my book bag on and ran out the front door, I had to get over a few streets before a taxi would pick me up. Finally I got one and headed to the school. Security was hesitant to let me in, but since I knew one of the guys it was okay. I walked in class and looked around. My math teacher frowned at me as I came in, she was the kind that would do everything she could to tick you off, so we usually avoided each other. Names were being called for roll, people answered some just sat there, and I was one of them. She just saw me come in. A few seconds went by then her heels began to click on the ceramic floor as she walked over to me. I felt her tap on my shoulder, "are you not here today?" I sat there with my head on my desk. I was sleepy but that wouldn’t pass as an excuse here. "Sadly I guess I am." She jerked my book bag off my desk and told me to sit up then she walked away.
The day went by very slowly. The coaches came around handing out sheets about signing up for after school activities, sports wise. I was never a huge sport person, but I could play. I ran into Levi after the bell rung, "hey Melody you gonna try it this year finally?" I glanced up at him. His brown hair was messy but he could pull it off, he was smiling. "I'm not sure, you?" He let out a warm laugh and his dimples bore into his cheeks," Nah. I'll see you later though." He gave me a small push and walked away. "Excuse me, Melody may I see you in my office for a moment?" Crap. I turned slowly to see the solemn look on our principals’ face. Always was I in trouble, innocent no not so much. But it still sucks. We sat across from each other when he let out a slow breath. I watched the tension from his face fade. "I have been informed that you are falling behind in your math class. I have called your father-" I jerked in my seat as he said it. "My moms boyfriend. Not my father,'' I corrected him. His head turned at me interrupting him. “My apologies, but I have informed him about your grades and he said he will deal with it. You need to pick up tutoring or do something otherwise you will fail." I got up and grabbed my stuff. I knew he wasn't done lecturing me, this wasn't the first time we'd had this talk. I slammed the door when I left, hearing my name fade behind the walls.
I walked to my science class and sat by some jock looking guy that was asleep. The teacher was talking about ancient things when the door opened and a girl walked in to talk to her. I guess jock guy woke up because he was letting out a loud whistle when I looked back at him. She turned her head with pure hatred fixed on her face. Her black hair fell making her eyes look dark, which made things even creepier. She turned back to the teacher, smiled, and walked out. "Dang she is fine." I looked back at him. Just hit him Melody, just do it. Then he looked at me and got a smirk on his face, "my names Justin, but you can call me J. I’m the quarterback." I looked back at the teacher, trying to ignore him and pay attention. "I'm the quarterback, did you hear me?" he said again. I turned my head to the side and smiled, "I'm not impressed Justin, did you hear me or should I say it again." His smile faded then he pulled his hood up and laid his head back on his desk.
