Part 3

I was standing in the cafeteria leaned against the wall when I felt someone looking at me. I glanced up to see the dark haired girl from earlier on the other side of the room, her eyes fixed on mine. For a moment I looked away but when I looked back she was gone. Maybe she was never there, I just imagined it. Great I was losing my mind. I closed my eyes and leaned my head down toward the floor trying to relax some. When I opened them I saw shoes "Melody?" I looked up at Levi, "you ok?" I closed my eyes and opened them to make sure he was actually there, "Yeah I was just thinking." He laughed then got sort of quiet. "I kind of missed you,'' I said. He grinned at me, "wanna go to a football game with me tonight?" That was something I had never been asked before and I wasn’t a huge fan of football, but why not. "Sure. Just let me ask my mom."

During lunch I sat at a table with Levi and his friends, Jessi came over and joined us. I don't eat school food, but Levi let me pick at his grapes. Justin was talking about the football game tonight, all the players were stoked about it. "I'm bringing Melody,'' Levi said happily. Everyone stopped talking and looked at us. "I thought you weren't interested" Justin said. I wish I had known these two were friends, I felt extremely uncomfortable now. "Wait, Melody you don't like football?" Levi asked. I just looked at them both for a minute. "Its okay,'' I replied. It took about five seconds for all the players at the table to get up and walk away, Levi was the only one to stay. "I'm sorry,'' I whispered. I watched his face break into a smile, "why are you sorry, cause they walked off? I don't even like football."

The bell rung and I followed everyone out of the cafeteria, heading toward my locker. I opened it and was putting my books on the shelf when Jessi ran up to me, "Melody did you hear about the new girl!" Before I could turn to look at her I heard people yelling. Quickly we followed everyone outside into the parking lot and there she was. The new girl standing in the gravel, her hair pulled back into a pony tail, her hands bawled into fists at her sides. There were two other girls, Tiffany and Heather, yelling in her face. "Scream all you want but don't touch me,'' she told them. Heather grabbed her shirt and jerked her forward, "like this?" she spat. Then everything happened faster than my mind could follow. Heather fell backwards with the new girl on top. "Get away from her!" Tiffany was screaming. The girl had a tight grip on Heathers hair and her fist was pounding into her face. Heather reached up toward the girls face, digging her nails into her cheek. You could see the tiny drops of blood staining her white shirt, this only brought more screams from the crowd around them. The double doors to the school flew open, "security is coming!" a guy yelled. I stepped through the crowd toward the girls, "yall have to stop! Come on!"

Everyone was running back to the school, I knew security would be here fast. I stepped behind the new girl and put my arms under hers and tried to drag her back, "let her go!" Finally she released her, but with a quick move she gave a hard kick to Heathers ribs. Jessi ran over to her to help her up, I could hear the deep breaths of air Heather was trying to suck in. She winced, touching her side as Jessi helped her stand. "Get her out of here!'' Jessi screamed at me. The new girl jerked away from me and grabbed her stuff, then ran toward the school. Everyone was too caught up trying to get to class or checking on Heather, so I got my stuff and went after her. I didn’t see her in the hall but I heard one of the doors slam, I took a chance and followed the sound. This door was at the end of the hall and it led back outside. I pushed it open and could see her running for the woods. "Great,'' I mumbled, but still followed her.

I walked for a few minutes through the woods and saw her punching a tree, her small hands becoming bloody. Then she turned and saw me, her face was twisted in anger. "Are you okay?" I whispered, I wasn’t sure if she would get mad at me for following her and the words didn’t really want to come out either. She started towards me like she would destroy everything in her path, then she stopped a few inches from my face, "I didn't need your help!" she hissed. I ran the words over in my mind, "I know." She shook her head and turned her back to me. I took a deep breath and stepped closer to her, I was going to put my hand on her back, but she started to tremble before I touched her. "Get away from me," she looked back at me with pain filled eyes. I wasn't sure what to do, less likely think. Do I hug her anyway or just go like she told me to?
