Some people assume the point of religion is to follow a bunch of rules. For them, God is a referee with a whistle in his mouth, looking for infractions. He's looking for fouls, blowing the whistle on people who break a rule.
I think it is revealing that Jesus reserved some of his harshest criticism for the rule-oriented religious leaders of his day. Why would he be so harsh on those who were just trying to be pleasing to God? Because they were headed down the wrong path. Religion isn't about rules.
