I tried talking to my dog,
It didn't go quite well;
I looked really rather silly
Though I really couldn't tell.
I told her of everything going wrong
And of everything going right,
I spoke to her of day time,
I spoke to her of night,
Of all the bad things happening
Around our twirling world,
Of droughts and floods and earthquakes
And our own local hurly-burls.
I spoke to her of love and war
Where everything is fair,
I almost spoke about the neighbour's cat
But thought 'No let's not go there.'
After it all she made not a sound,
Spoke not a word, not a peep
Perhaps I'd made her doze off
While counting little sheep?
'Lucky? Where you listening?'
For once she spoke and broke the still
'What if the mouth says something
But the lips stay mute, say nil?'
