The robin had its red-breast The partridge had its tree The starling raised it's yellow beak To spare a thought for me.
The sun it rose each morning A brand new day to see And sank again to bring the stars Fine diamonds, just for me.
The hedgerow had its secrets, It shared them for a fee And Nature opened up her chest As a treasure trove for me.
Then Propriety came with bridles And Conformity came in glee To see a bit between my teeth And blinkers crowning me.
Oh robin, where's your red-breast? Oh partridge, where's your tree? Oh starling, in the morning light Look at the world and at our plight Our one-way train, Our selfish gain, In sorry state to e'er remain And spare a thought for me.
