A race it was in order
Amongst the brother gods,
Ganesha looked to Kartikeya
To mark down their odds.
'I challenge you, my brother,
To a worldwide race;
Thrice around with victor
Taking honour's place.'
Kartikeya took the challenge
With a twinkle in his eye,
Jumped up upon his peacock
And off around he'd fly.
Once past the Himalaya's,
Second past the stars
Third around the Amazon
In his journey all afar.
But Ganesha was quite wily
While admiring his brother's zeal
To soar o'er mountain ranges
And across the seven seas,
Kartikeya returned again
To find Ganesha there,
Cross-legged at his mother's knee
Under Shiva's fatherly stare.
'My brother, you are foolish
Flitting round the world alone
And while you sought to see it all
I circled but my own.
The world it is a wondrous place
Where curiosity's seed is sown
But although it is amazing
The world, it starts at home.'
