Amidst a broiling sea

Of beautiful people,

A tide of every creed and colour

Lithe and shining in ecstasy

I stop and stand to stare.

Beautiful, brilliant, slender limbs

Throwing whistling, torpedoes

Through throngs of buzzing, bouncing,

Glowing heads;

Gold and silver, ebony,

Spouting greetings, goodbyes, obscenities and wit

With ease and meaning, rippling

Through electric air,

Over lights and landscapes

Made by their fair hands.

Never has the human race

Seemed so majestic, violent,

Full of fervour, wonderful and bright,

Twirling through infinity, full speed ahead

A blur of vitality, a passionate glow and hum,

Bubbling all the way

As the sun and moon waltz 'round

Their muddled, magnificent whiz zing crawl

Absorbed, enthralled

By this unique and intricate spectacle.

And what is this?

What is this daily pattern,

This quotidian eruption of la naissance, le mort et la vie?

A specimen

Of Man's glory, pride and might?

Here, under stars and cities' beacons alike

The finest display of everyday life,

Hustle and bustle

In Man's search for meaning.
