9 April 2012

There are lots of people that will tell you working through the night is a bad thing. Hell, they are probably right. But recently I have been working until the small hours of the morning and getting things done.

This has lead me into a very strange nocturnal life. I'm glad the days are getting longer otherwise I doubt I would see sunlight. But there are advantages to working late. For one I feel like I am the only one awake in the world. While this is true in my little bubble there are others across the atlantic who I can talk to via the Internet, but these fellows reside in the virtual world and are confined to my desk. This means I don't get away from my desk nearly as much as when I am working in the day.

When I do retreat from my desks (look away mother bear) it's for a cup of tea or a cigarette break. Without the distractions of my co-inhabitants or fellow Romsey dwellers there is a welcome sense of calm for five minutes.

Once I have taken my full of nicotine or brewed leaves I can return to my desk for another couple of hours.

It is soon early in the morning and usually I would retreat to my bed but tonight I am determined to stay awake and alert throughout the night until morning. For as much as I do love these romantic nocturnal habits and musings I do also love my sleep. So in order to shake the bonds of insomnia I am pulling an all nighter so that I am suitably bushed and get I sleep at a "regular" time tomorrow.

So here's to the night worker, I have much respect for you. I raise a mug of Luke warm tea and toast our last (hopefully) night as brothers and bid you goodnight. I shall see you in the morning for Coffee & Bagels, our last supper if you will, then I will join the regular folk with their regular routine. The real world of normal beckons but the nights at my desk will not be forgotten and will surely be revisited when I have a tight deadline.
